The first part of the Player's Guide is intended to provide a new player with enough information about Gateway Guardians so the player can come up with a player concept.

The following steps will help in the creation of a character using the Hero Game System.
- Name
- History - A character's history will often define the character's personality, motivations, abilities, and profession. A few paragraphs are often needed to truly develop a character's history.
- Birthplace and date
- Family of origin (parents occupation, married or not, siblings, other relatives)
- Relationship with the character's family of origin (no contact, regular contact, very close contact)
- Abilities/Skills - Generally grows out of history and profession
- Profession - How does your character make a living?
- Education - How much education does the character have? What areas of expertise does the character have? What was their social life like in school?
- Hobbies
- Current Social life
- Personality - A sentence or two describing the character's personality
- Motivation - Why is the character a hero?
- Powers and abilities
- How did the character become gain their powers and abilities?
- The first use of character's superpowers
- May or may not be part of character complications
- Enemies - Provide a detailed reason as to why and who
- Rivalries - Provide a detailed reason as to why and who
- Important Non-Player Characters - family member, significant other, nice neighbor, etc
